Poor chain/sprocket design
from Hampstead, NH
About Me Do-It-Yourself
Comments about 42' 2-Stage Snow Thrower (Manual lift):
This is now my 3rd winter with the 42" snow thrower. When it is working properly it does a great job of throwing the snow quite a distance. However the chain will stretch and begin to wear the teeth on both sprockets and when that starts, it will completely strip in a short period of time and then you are out about $100 (if you replace the sprockets yourself) and start over. The manual does not even mention anything about checking the tension on the chain periodically or tell you how to adjust it. It is adjustable by loosening the 6 bolts and sliding the gearbox housing down until the chain is taut and then re-tightening the six bolts. I feel bad for those who purchased this unit and are not handy because they would have to wait for their unit to be repaired after every other snow storm and that would be a major point of frustration and costs, defeating the purpose of purchasing this unit in the first place.Through trial and error (and some practical engineering) I have designed a fix by using an idler sprocket with a bracket that is installed on the inside of one side of the chain with an adjustable spring tensioning rod that causes the chain to always remain taut even when the chain stretches, eliminating the need to worry about the chain wearing the teeth on the sprockets. This modification has been working flawlessly for the last three snow storms and now I am finally content with its performance.I would love to offer the design to Husqvarna if they are interested in improving the performance of this snow blower attachment and keeping their customers happy.

42" snowblower for a 2346 Husqvarna riding mower
By Hair bear
from Sandpoint Idaho
I am disappointed in the durability of the drive unit it only lasted one year, and can't locate parts. I put a lot of time on snow blowing but usually get two years use out of a unit.

This works amazingly well when used with the chains and tire weights. No more slipping on ice or jamming my wrists with a walk behind blower. This worked well all winter in both wet and dry snow. I didn't have to clear the chute once. Very powerful, reliable and effective. The manual lift is easy to operate. I have a large flat driveway and a long sidewalk to clear. This makes the job easy and fast. Since I already had the lawn tractor, the acquisition cost was less than a walk behind. This has been one of my better purchases. I highly recommend this product.
