I was looking for a homeowner level saw that would could handle larger 20-24" tree bucking. I live at 7000', so I was looking for a saw with extra power since I would be losing a good bit due to the altitude. The 460 rancher has been great. I was concerned that I would have to do a good bit of carburetor fiddling to get the saw to run right at altitude with all the EPA restriction now days. Not true in my case at 7000'... the saw runs great right out of the box (maximum rich high and low needles without removing EPA adjustment stops). I would warn anyone at sea level to remove the needle limiters and consider riching up the carb though because it definitely isn't too lean at 7000' (max rich settings). By the way the saw starts easy warm or cold... I don't like the compression release button though. It leaks spludge and makes the top of the cylinder a mess with fuel/oil over time. The saw starts fine without the release anyway so I don't use it. It still leaks though!Saw starts to work harder on 18"+ trees (ponderosa pine), but still cuts great for a non professional level saw. I probably would have chosen a lighter weight and smaller saw if I lived at sea level to reduce operator fatigue since I only use the saw about once a month.Husky isn't super clear on the bar and chain specs though... My 460 came with a 20" x 3/8" pitch x .058" width bar and chain . This info would have been nice because I ordered the wrong .050" width replacement chains at the same time as the saw.

My previous chainsaw was a Husqvarna and I used it for years and loved it. When I wore it out I decided that I would get another Husky and this may have been a mistake. I ordered a Rancher 460 from Amazon. After it arrived I drove 100 miles to cut a load of wood, I found out that the saw was defective and either had a cracked gas tank or disconnected fuel line, because fuel just poured right through the engine, when I tried to put gas in it. When I called customer service I got no satisfaction from them other than to say, take it to a repair shop and they will repair it free of charge. Bear in mind it has never run for a second. I was also told that there was no way to return the defective saw because it can not be shipped back. I took it to the local shop that they told me would repair the saw, but they don't actually repair them, just ship them out. So here I am, I couldn't cut wood that I traveled over 200 miles to do, I have now been sitting here for three weeks waiting for the return of my supposedly repaired saw, and it is eating up the warrantee in the repair shop. When I do get it back, I can't get back to where I cut firewood until next summer and by then the warrantee will have run out so if it doesn't hold up I am stuck..Then I also found another problem what I think is a design flaw with this model. If you are out cutting wood and need to take the side cover off to replace a chain, and don't get the chain brake all the way off, you can not get the cover back on. You might just as well pack up all your gear and head to the repair shop because you are through cutting wood with that saw and you can not fix it. It takes a special tool to reset the chain brake and you can not use the saw until you have a mechanic reset it. My old saw had the chain brake as part of the cover and you could reset it if you needed to while you were out in the field. With the experience I had with this saw and with Husqvarna , I would sure consider looking at another maker.

About Me Professional
Comments about HUSQVARNA 460 Rancher:
I use these saws on a river project they get dropped, they cut in water, they get sand in them. As you can see they are put to the test. They start easily have really good power. To me these are the best on the market!!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

better then their popular competitors
Pretty decent saw.
from Mifflintown Pa
I bought this saw about 4 years ago, I use it to cut all my fire wood and then some. It has preformed very well. You can burry the 20 inch bar into a tree and not be lacking power. Its nice to use, a little on the heavy side to be cutting brush all day but has served great for fire wood. I had a problem after three years with the carburetor letting fuel into the crank case while in storage. I took it to the shop I bought it from and he replaced the carb. He said its a pretty common problem with Husqvarna carbs and some do it brand new. All in a I'm happy with this saw.
If you fell/cut a lot of firewood this is the saw you need.

I purchased a 455 Rancher new in 2005 and have had great service out of that saw. Husqvarna has definitely earned my business. Our seven acres was heavily grazed by livestock for thirty five years and it was chuck-full of hedge and locust. Those trees get big and there are few woods as hard as those two species. About eighteen months ago I began to fell and cut up all of it for fence posts and firewood. We just bought the 460 Rancher so we could have two saws. The low end torque of this saw is great. I use my chainsaw four to eight hours every weekend. We bought the 460R on Friday morning and by Sunday night it had its first four hours. This saw is a runner! If you use a chainsaw a lot, you really need to take a look at the 460R.
Piece of poorly designed junk
from Greeneville TN
I have owned about 10 different husky saws first was 281 had 4 394s 1 455 3 575s .The 460 is the worst every on design brand new bar and brand new chain and it's almost out of adjustment from the start all of the others you can wear the chain completely out and still have adjustment. The 460 when the chain is about half you either take out a link or replace the chain.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Husqvarna 460 Chainsaw POOR product.
from Detroit, MI
Last Husqvarna I'll buy! Can't get the chain brake over the clutch to reassemble after swapping chains. Is there a recall on this so called engineering? I've repaired assembled and reassembled lots of chainsaws, over 40 years and never had this issue?

Only problem is that when the chain comes off the sprocket, the sprocket damages the chain drivers that ride in the groove of the bar. This damage on the chain will cause the chain not to fit in the bar.

This brand new 460 would not start. Some value..
from Redding, CA
This brand new 460 would not start .....even though it was brand new. Worthless. Additionally...the instruction and owners manual was simply pathetic....poorly written with terrible organization. This is not a consumer friendly chainsaw....to say the least. I would not recommend it to anyone.
Nice saw while it lasted, but it just didn't last
from Lake View, NY
I bought a 5 acre lot that had been neglected the last few decades, so my goal was to clear fallen down trees and turn it into usable firewood. I also picked up a case of the premixed 50:1 Husqvarna fuel to ensure that the saw had a good break in period and would last awhile. After a few hours each weekend, on the 4th weekend owning the saw, the starter rope sheared off mid cut. I brought the saw home, took off the outer plastics, and realized that the damage was much more than replacing a starter rope. I'm not sure what caused what, but the pulley was melted and there were portions of sheared rope through out. I ran the saw back to where it was purchased, so they ordered me another one. By the way, prior to this, I loved the saw. I didn't have any issues cutting smaller branches to 3ft wide trees. I pl2 days later the new saw arrived and I was ready to get back out there. I opened the box (which had a crease running down the middle of one side) and pulled out a damaged saw. I can't tell if the box was dropped or crushed or possibly nothing at all, but I knew this saw was going right back. I attempted to engage the brake, but it just kept snapping back. I shook the unit and heard at least 5 pieces rattling inside. I didn't bother to pull any of the plastics off, i just returned it again. My review is not based on this saw, as I'm not certain who is at all fault. The saw did have grease all over, so I'm not sure if that is sloppy work or another result of bad shipping/packing. The store manager convinced me to wait the 2 more days and try once more, so I am. I expect my 3rd saw the come later today. I own everything I can Husqvarna; I just picked up a new garden tractor as well. Yesterday was the first cut and loved it. My weed wacker is going into it's 6th year without a single issue, besides replacing the spark plug and line. If this had happened with any other company, I would have taken my money elsewhere, but I'm optimistic and hopefully it will be worth it.
