How to use the object avoidance feature in Automower® robotic lawn mowers

What is object avoidance?

Object avoidance is a feature that enables the Automower® robotic lawn mower to detect and navigate around objects on the lawn that stand out from the grass. When an object is detected, the mower changes its course and continues mowing in a different direction. This feature not only reduces the risk of operational stops but also minimises the risk of damaging objects and disturbing wildlife on the lawn.

Automower® models supporting object avoidance

The object avoidance feature is available in the following Automower® models:

  • Automower® 410XE NERA
  • Automower® 450X NERA
  • Automower® 430X NERA
  • Automower® 435X AWD*
  • Automower® 535 AWD*

Note: Other Automower® models lack the necessary sensors and technology for the object avoidance feature to function. For models marked with an asterisk (*), you will need to download the latest firmware and enable the object avoidance feature in the Automower® Connect app.

Considerations for using object avoidance

  • The sensors may be sensitive not only to objects on the lawn but also to tall flowers and grass. For instance, if the grass is very high in some areas or if there are high dandelions on your lawn, you might want to disable object avoidance temporarily to avoid leaving uncut areas on your lawn.
  • The efficiency of the object avoidance feature depends on the size of the object and the height of the grass. A small object, such as a golf ball, hidden in high grass may be hard for the sensors to detect.
  • The feature is automatically disabled when the mower moves within 1.2 metres/4 feet of the work area boundary to ensure that no areas on the lawn are left uncut. This means that the mower will not automatically detect or avoid objects in this area. This applies to both virtual and physical boundaries.
  • Remember, while the object avoidance feature is very good at detecting objects on the lawn, it is not a safety feature. There is no guarantee that an object on the lawn will not be run over by the mower, as several factors influence the sensors’ success in detecting objects, such as the size and placement of the object and the grass height.

Enabling and disabling object avoidance

  1. Open and sign in to the Automower® Connect app.
  2. Select More > Settings > Accessories.
  3. Use the slider to enable or disable object avoidance.
