How to maintain your yard during the summer

Summer is the outdoor season! Here are some tips for maintaining a perfect yard during the dog days of summer.

1. Apply a grub control product in early summer

You’ll know you have a grub problem if your grass appears dead and brown and sits loosely on the soil. This is because the grubs eat the roots of the grass.

2. Know your grass type to determine watering and mowing standards.

Whether or not you’re fanatical about the look of your lawn, you should be aware of the grass varieties growing in your yard. Tall fescue, Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia and other grass types require different irrigation schedules and mowing heights. Customize your maintenance plan to your particular turf.

3. Mow grass on a regular basis to maintain its health and prevent weeds or patchiness.

Allowing your lawn to grow tall will choke out new grass growth and encourage the spread of weed seeds. Be sure to mow regularly, or you can use a robotic lawn mower for a tidy appearance 24/7.

4. Your lawn’s appearance will be greatly improved by sharp, clean edges.

Trim around the sides with an edger or string trimmer.

5. Spot control weeds as needed, but have realistic expectations.

Summer is a time of high temperature and even periods of drought, and most weeds and grasses will go dormant in such conditions. Since a plant must be actively growing to absorb an herbicide, lawn weed killers may not be as effective on the hottest summer days. This is why many people save their major weed control efforts for the spring or autumn.

6. Fertilize the lawn every six to eight weeks.

Adding nitrogen to your lawn will improve the strength and color of your grass. However, like with your weed control, you’ll want to avoid adding fertilizer during prolonged periods of drought or heat, when grass will naturally go dormant.

7. Water grass deeply, but no more than necessary.

Don’t let your turf burn up in the summer! However, overwatering your grass will prevent grass from establishing a strong root system, and it could lead to fungus. You can find many helpful guides online for how often to water different types of grass. Be sure to water grass in the early morning to avoid losing moisture to evaporation.

8. Keep mower blades sharp.

A dull mower blade will tear at grass rather than cut it, which is far more damaging to its health.

9. Mulch rather than bag your grass.

One way to fertilize your soil naturally is to use a mulching mower or robotic lawn mower that will leave minuscule grass clippings on the turf. As these clippings decompose, they will add nutrients to the soil.
