Intermittent chainsaw maintenance

After using your chainsaw for a while, performing intermittent maintenance is extremely important. Learn how to maintain the spark plug and the spark arrestor on the chainsaw and how to check the chain lubrication.

When engine power level is low or the chainsaw is hard to start or won’t start, you may need to clean or replace the spark plug.

Spark plug maintenance:

1. To access the spark plug, take off the cover.
2. Once the cover has been removed, pull the cap and wire off the spark plug. Before you go further, make sure that there is no corrosion on the top of the contact, and if there is, clean it with a wire brush.
3. To remove the spark plug, use a socket wrench with a large opening in an anticlockwise direction. Check the spark plug for any cracks or corrosion, check your contacts on the electrode.
4. If there are any carbon deposits on there, clean it with the wire brush.
5. If there is no damage to the spark plug and you were able to clean the electrode and the contact post, thread it back into the engine. Make sure that it is firmly seated with the socket wrench. Do not overtighten.
6. When applying the cap and wire to the post, make sure that it clicks into position.

Spark arrestor maintenance:

1. Position of the spark arrestor can be in the front, on the top and at the side of the muffler. It is always locked with a cover and screws. Remove the cover and once it is off, remove the spark arrestor.
2. During inspection, make sure that the spark arrestor is intact and there are no rips and holes in it. Also, make sure that there is no excessive carbon buildup. If there is any carbon buildup, it will make your chainsaw run at a lower RPM, and it will not breathe very well.
3. Clean the carbon buildup from the spark arrestor with the wire brush.
4. Once the spark arrestor is clean, put it back in place.

Husqvarna recommends that the spark arrestor is cleaned after every 50 hours of operation.
