Why is there hardened resin or dirt build-up on my chainsaw chain?

While using the chainsaw, you can experience a build-up of resin or dirt on the chainsaw chain.

Generally, this is an indication that the chain is not receiving enough oil, which helps to keep the resin from sticking to the chain. Please check the bar oil holes and the oiler adjustment. See your operator’s manual for guidance on cleaning the bar, determining if your saw has an adjustable oiler and the proper settings for your bar length.

Another reason is a dull chain being forced to cut, creating heat and causing the resin to burn into the chain. Some types of wood will create more resin than others.
