How to create a passage in an Automower® installation

A passage in an Automower® installation is a narrow section of the work area that has boundary wire on each side and connects two parts of the work area. The robotic lawn mower can travel through the passage to the other part of the work area.

All Automower® models* have automatic passage handling that helps your Automower® robotic lawn mower through narrow passages and minimises track marks in your lawn.

*Except Automower® 105.

How to lay the boundary and guide wire in a passage

When installing the boundary wire in a passage without a guide wire, the recommended minimum distance between the boundary wires on each side of the passage is 2 m/6 ft 6 in. If you use a guide wire to lead the mower through the passage, the recommended minimum distance between the boundary wires is 60 cm/24 in.**

When laying the guide wire through the passage, make sure that the distance between the guide wire and the boundary wire is at least 30 cm (12 in), as seen in the illustration.

Automower distances in passages

The product always runs to the left of the guide wire as seen facing the charging station. It is recommended to have as much free space as possible to the left of the guide wire.

If the robotic lawn mower gets stuck when following the boundary or guide wire through the passage, try adjusting the corridor width.

**For 435X AWD and 535 AWD, we recommend a minimum passage width of 2 m/6 ft 6 in for a good cutting result.

Systematic Passage Mowing

Some of our Automower® models offer systematic passage mowing. This feature improves the cutting result in narrow passages, as the mower automatically switches from a random mowing pattern to a systematic mode in narrow passages. A guide wire must be installed to use this function.

The robotic lawn mower follows the guide wire to the passage and starts to mow systematically at a set distance from the charging station. When the mower reaches the end of the passage, it starts cutting as normal. If the passage reaches a dead end, the mower will turn around and mow the lawn back through the passage.

How to set up Systematic Passage Mowing

Start by measuring the distance along the guide wire from the charging station to the beginning (inside) of the narrow passage. Then adjust the settings using the Automower® Connect app or the mower display.

In Automower® Connect:

  1. Select More > Settings > Installation > Lawn Coverage.
  2. Activate Systematic Passage Mowing.
  3. Set the measured distance.
  4. Set how often you would like the mower to use Systematic Passage Mowing.

On the mower display:

  1. Navigate to Installation > Lawn Coverage > Area 1–3 > select area.
  2. Select How far? and set the measured distance.
  3. Select How often? and set how often you would like the mower to use Systematic Passage Mowing.
  4. Navigate to Installation > Lawn Coverage > More.
  5. Activate Systematic Passage Mowing.

The frequency (%) is specified as a proportion of the total number of times the mower leaves the charging station. At all other times, the robotic lawn mower starts mowing at the charging station. It is recommended to set a low percentage for Systematic Passage Mowing to prevent the grass in the passage from becoming worn.
