How to store a high-pressure washer

Proper storage is essential to keep your high-pressure washer in good condition.

One of the most common reasons for pressure washer damage is incorrect storage, especially when water left inside the system freezes during the winter months.

The best place to store your washer is indoors in a heated environment. If that’s not possible, you can still protect it by following the correct storage steps below.

Step-by-step: Preparing a high-pressure washer for storage

Power down safely

  • Stop the washer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect it from the water supply.

Dry and organise accessories

  • Make sure all accessories are dry before storage.
  • Place the spray handle, spray lance, foam sprayer and nozzles in their holders.
  • Disconnect the high-pressure hose, wind it onto the hose reel and secure the power cord with its strap.
  • Fold down the transport handle if your model includes one.

Remove leftover detergent

Detergent can damage the system if left inside. The process depends on your model:

With a foam sprayer

  • Remove the detergent bottle, rinse it with water and dry it.
  • Connect the washer to a water source.
  • Attach a standard nozzle and run the washer for 60 seconds to flush out the detergent.

With a built-in detergent tank

  • Empty and rinse the tank. Reinstall it on the washer.
  • Connect the washer to a water source.
  • Attach a standard nozzle and run the washer for 60 seconds to clean the system.

Drain the water from the system

  • Disconnect the washer from the water source.
  • Close the mains valve (if connected to household water supply).
  • Remove the garden hose or suction hose, depending on your setup.
  • Squeeze the spray gun trigger until no water comes out.
  • Turn the power switch to ON (I) and let it run until no water exits the hose, then switch to OFF (0).

Dry the washer and accessories

  • Wipe down the washer body, hose and attachments.
  • Ensure all parts are completely dry before storage.

Store in a frost-free environment

  • Choose a dry, frost-free storage space.
  • Avoid damp areas that can cause rust, mould or freezing damage.

Pro tips for long-term care

  • Always remove water and detergent before storage.
  • When possible, store indoors to protect against frost.
  • Keep accessories dry to prevent wear or corrosion.

High-pressure washer winter storage FAQ

No. Leaving your washer outside in freezing temperatures can cause water inside the pump and hoses to freeze, expand and damage the machine. Always store it in a dry, frost-free place.

Always dry the washer and accessories thoroughly before storing. Avoid damp storage areas, as moisture can cause rust on metal parts and mould on plastic or rubber components.

Detergent left inside the washer can dry out, clog the system or damage seals. Flushing the machine with clean water before storage prevents these issues.

If properly prepared, your pressure washer can be stored for several months without problems. Just make sure it’s drained, dry and kept in a frost-free environment.
