How to enable GeoFence and GPS tracking on your Automower® robotic lawn mower

Depending on model, Automower® robotic lawn mowers are equipped with two separate security and tracking systems: GeoFence alarm and GPS tracking. Understanding the difference between these two features will help you use them effectively.

In this article:

What is GeoFence alarm and how does it work?

GeoFence alarm is a GPS-based theft protection system that acts as a virtual fence for your Automower® robotic lawn mower. You set a geographic point (centre) and radius, and if the mower moves outside this defined area, an alarm is triggered locally on the mower.

Important: GeoFence alarm does not require Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity to function. The alarm will trigger even if the mower is not connected to the network.

Supported models

The following Automower® models support GeoFence:

  • Automower® Aspire R6V
  • Automower® 305E NERA & 310E NERA
  • Automower® 308V & 312V
  • Automower® 320 NERA
  • Automower® 405E NERA & 410XE NERA
  • Automower® 405VE & 410VE NERA
  • Automower® 420 & 440
  • Automower® 430X NERA & 450X NERA
  • Automower® 430V & 450V NERA
  • Automower® 405X and 415X
  • Automower® 435X AWD & 435X AWD NERA

What happens when the GeoFence alarm goes off?

If the GeoFence alarm is enabled and the mower moves outside of the defined radius:

  • An alarm will start on the mower
  • The mower will enter sleep mode or turn off (depending on model)
  • The PIN code is needed to turn off the alarm and wake up the mower

For security reasons, you always need to enter the mower PIN code to enable or disable GeoFence alarm or make any related changes.

What is GPS tracking and how does it work?

  • GPS tracking is a separate feature that allows you to track your mower’s movements on a map in the Automower® Connect app.
  • GPS tracking requires network connectivity (Wi-Fi or mobile) to work. Your mower model must have connectivity built-in or be equipped with an Automower® Connect kit.
  • This feature shows the mower’s real-time position and movement history in the map.
  • The mower updates its position every 30 seconds. As a result, there may be slight differences between the mower’s actual location and its position on the map.

GPS tracking in the Automower® Connect app

When GPS tracking is active and your mower is connected to the network, you can view:

  • The Automower® icon on the map showing the mower’s position When clicked, the pin shows the coordinates of the mower
  • The blue circle indicating the GeoFence radius (up to 500 metres) If you don’t see it, click the settings icon in the map view and toggle on the GeoFence radius button
  • The charging station icon showing the starting point of the mower
  • The position is specified with a precision of 10 metres, depending on the GPS signal strength and Google Maps accuracy

Connection types and tracking capabilities

The tracking capabilities of your mower depend on the model and the type of network connectivity:

Bluetooth connection only: GPS tracking and map view are not available when connected only via Bluetooth.

Wi-Fi connection: GPS tracking and map view are available, but only work when the mower is within Wi-Fi coverage range (typically limited to your property).

Mobile connection: GPS tracking and map view are available and can track your mower’s location even when it moves far outside your property, as long as there is mobile network coverage.

When GeoFence alarm and GPS tracking work together

If both GeoFence alarm and GPS tracking are enabled and the mower moves outside the GeoFence:

  • The alarm will trigger on the mower (GeoFence alarm - works without connectivity)
  • If the mower is within Wi-Fi or mobile network coverage, it will send its position to Automower® Connect (GPS tracking) every 30 seconds
  • You will receive a notification in the Automower® Connect app when the status changes to Outside of GeoFence (if notifications are enabled and the mower is connected)
  • You can follow the mower’s movements in the map view (only while the mower remains within network coverage)

Important: For Wi-Fi connected mowers, GPS tracking on the map will only work within Wi-Fi coverage range. If the mower is moved outside this range, the alarm will still trigger, but you will not be able to see its location on the map. Mobile connectivity provides wider tracking coverage beyond your property.

Activating GeoFence alarm

You can activate GeoFence alarm and change its settings using the Automower® Connect app or the mower display, depending on your mower model.

Using the Automower® Connect app

  1. Place your mower approximately in the centre of the work area
  2. Connect to your mower with Bluetooth
  3. Select More > Settings > Security > GeoFence in Automower® Connect
  4. Toggle the on/off button to enable or disable the GeoFence alarm
  5. Use the slide bar to set the radius
  6. Press Save

You will now be notified by the Automower® Connect app when the mower moves outside the GeoFence and the status changes to “Outside of GeoFence” (if notifications are enabled and the mower is connected to the network).

Using the mower display (for mowers with a keypad)

Enabling and disabling GeoFence alarm

Applies to Automower® models with a display and GPS.

  1. Navigate to Accessories > Automower® Connect > GeoFence > Activate GeoFence
  2. Push the OK button
  3. Select or deselect Activate GeoFence and push the OK button

Setting a centre point

  1. Place your mower approximately in the centre of the work area
  2. Navigate to Accessories > Automower® Connect > GeoFence > New centre point on the mower display
  3. Push the OK button to set the centre position

Setting the GeoFence sensitivity

  1. Navigate to Accessories > Automower® Connect > GeoFence on the mower display
  2. Use the arrow buttons to select the level of GeoFence sensitivity
  3. Push the BACK button

Adding a phone number

If you add your phone number, you will get a text message (SMS) when the mower moves outside the Geofence and the status changes to Outside of GeoFence. You can add up to three phone numbers. There is a maximum of 10 messages each month. The SMS function is only available on some models.

Note: Adding a phone number is not mandatory for GeoFence alarm to work. The alarm will trigger locally on the mower regardless. If you do not add a phone number but have the mower connected to the network, you will still be notified in the Automower® Connect app if the mower status changes to Outside of GeoFence.

To add a phone number:

  1. Navigate to Accessories > Automower Connect > Communication > Use SMS
  2. Push the OK button
  3. Navigate to Accessories > Automower Connect > Communication > SMS phone numbers
  4. Enter the telephone number, including the country code (e.g. +46701234567)
  5. Push the BACK button
  6. Use the Test-SMS function to verify the specified telephone number

When storing Automower®

When storing the robotic lawn mower for a long period, such as during the winter, we recommend turning off the main switch. Once turned off, the GeoFence alarm will not be active until the mower is turned on again. When you turn the mower on, you need to enter the PIN code.

Troubleshooting GeoFence alarm

If the GeoFence alarm is triggered too easily

  • Lower the GeoFence sensitivity or increase the GeoFence radius
  • Reset the centre point to ensure it is at the centre of the work area

Error message: Alarm! Outside Geofence

The error message Alarm! Outside GeoFence typically appears when the Automower® robotic lawn mower is moved outside its designated GeoFence. To avoid triggering the alarm, remember to turn off the GeoFence alarm before intentionally moving the product outside the work area.
