How to examine and replace a spark plug on a garden tractor

To keep your Husqvarna garden tractor in good condition, make sure that the spark plug is clean and working properly. If the spark plug is dirty or damaged, there can be issues with starting your garden tractor or you may experience loss of power while using it.

For this you will need:

  • A cloth
  • A spark plug spanner
  • A steel brush
  • A new spark plug, if your old spark plug is damaged; make sure that you use the right type of spark plug, depending on your garden tractor engine model.

Cleaning and changing a spark plug on a garden tractor

  1. Open the engine cover.
  2. Remove the spark plug cap and clean around the spark plug.
  3. Remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench.
  4. Check the spark plug. If the electrodes are burnt or if the insulation has cracks or is damaged, replace the spark plug. If the spark plug is not damaged, clean it with a steel brush.
  5. Measure the electrode gap and make sure that it is correct.
  6. Bend the side electrode to adjust the electrode gap.
  7. Put the spark plug back in and turn it by hand until it touches the spark plug seat.
  8. Tighten the spark plug with a spark plug wrench until the washer is compressed.
  9. Tighten a used spark plug 1/8 of a turn more, and a new spark plug 1/4 of a turn more. CAUTION: Spark plugs that are not tightened correctly may cause damage to the engine.
  10. Attach the spark plug cap.

CAUTION: Do not try to start the engine if the spark plug or the ignition cable is removed.
