How to check and replace engine oil in a garden tractor

For your Husqvarna garden tractor to function optimally, the engine oil needs to be changed each year. It is best to do this before the start of the season.

How to check engine oil level in a garden tractor

  1. Park the product on level ground and stop the engine.
  2. Open the engine cover.
  3. Loosen the dipstick and pull it out.
  4. Clean the oil from the dipstick.
  5. Put the dipstick back and tighten.
  6. Loosen and pull the dipstick out and read the oil level.
  7. The oil level must be between the marks on the dipstick. If the level is near the ADD mark, fill oil to the FULL mark.
  8. Fill with oil through the hole that the dipstick sits in. Fill the oil slowly.
  9. Tighten the dipstick correctly before your start the engine. Start and idle the engine for about 30 seconds. Stop the engine. Wait 30 seconds and do a check of the oil level again.

NOTE: Make sure that you use the recommended engine oil for your specific garden tractor. You can check this in the operator’s manual. Do not mix two different types of oil.

How to replace engine oil in a garden tractor

If the engine is cold, start the engine for 1–2 minutes before draining the engine oil. This makes the engine oil warm and easier to drain.

WARNING: Do not operate the engine for more than 1–2 minutes before you drain the engine oil. The engine oil becomes very hot and can cause burning injuries. Let the engine become cool before you drain the engine oil.

WARNING: If you spill the engine oil on your body, clean with soap and water.

  1. Put the container below the oil drain plug.
  2. Remove the oil drain hose from the holder and put it through the gap.
  3. Remove the dipstick.
  4. Remove the end cap on the oil drain valve on the oil drain hose and let the engine oil drain into the container.
  5. When all oil is drained, install the end cap on the oil drain valve.
  6. If the engine has an oil filter, replace it. You can find a step-by-step guide in a section below.
  7. Slowly fill with oil through the hole for the dipstick. Use an oil with viscosity that complies with the temperature ranges in the image.

CAUTION: Do not mix different types of oil.
  8. Install the dipstick.
  9. Discard used engine oil.
