When autumn arrives and grass growth slows, it’s time to prepare your Automower® robotic lawn mower for winter. Proper storage protects your robotic lawn mower over the colder months and helps it start the new season without problems.
Professional winter service and service contracts
You can winterise your robotic lawn mower yourself using the checklist below, or leave it to your dealer. If you have a Husqvarna Warranty Plus, Service Plus, or Lease Plus contract, winter maintenance and storage may already be included, so it’s worth checking before you start.

Before your appointment: If your model supports GeoFence, disable it before bringing your robotic lawn mower to the dealer.

Save garage space by using your dealer’s winter storage services. Ask about availability when booking your annual service.
DIY winter storage: complete checklist
Follow these steps to properly prepare and store Automower® at home:
1. Before you begin
- Optimal grass length: Leave grass slightly longer (6–8 cm / 2.36 in–3.15 in) before winter. Longer grass provides better cold-weather protection for your lawn.
- Final charge: Fully charge your robotic lawn mower and switch it off before storage. This protects battery health during dormancy. Most models need no charging while in storage; some older models require charging every three months, so check your operator’s manual for specific requirements.
- GeoFence settings (if applicable):
- Storing within GeoFence area? Keep GeoFence active
- Moving outside the area? Disable GeoFence before powering off
2. Cleaning and maintenance
- Deep clean both your robotic lawn mower and the charging station: Clean the body, chassis, and blade disc. Remove all grass clippings and debris from moving parts. Inspect for any visible damage or excessive wear.
- Replace blades and screws: Install new blades and screws. This prevents rust and ensures sharp cutting edges next season.
- Inspection and maintenance check: Do a general inspection, checking for wear on parts, such as the lower front wheel bearings, blade disc and body panels. Rotate the wheels to listen for any squeaking, grinding or unusual resistance. Check the charging contacts on both your robotic lawn mower and the charging station for corrosion or debris. If you notice any issues or excessive wear, contact your dealer for spare parts or assistance.
3. Storage preparation
- Power supply: Disconnect and store in a dry, frost-free location.
- Wires (in boundary wire installations): Use an Automower® Connector box to organise and protect wire connectors. Label each wire for easy reconnection in spring. The video above shows how to use the Connector box.
- Proper position: Rest your robotic lawn mower on all wheels on a flat surface, or use an Automower® Wall Hanger designed for secure storage.
4. Choosing where to store
Recommended: store indoors
We strongly advise storing the following indoors (garage, shed, basement), in a dry environment with above freezing temperatures (>0°C/32°F):
- robotic lawn mower
- Charging station (except Automower®NERA baseplate)
- Power supply
Automower® NERA models
Only the top of the charging station needs indoor storage; the baseplate is designed to remain outdoors. Watch our video on how to remove the top of the Automower® NERA charging station:
Wire free installations
The EPOS® reference station is weatherproof and can stay outside year-round.
If leaving outdoors (recommended):
- Keep power supply connected
- Maintains all virtual boundaries and map settings
If storing indoors:
- Keep the mounting arm installed on the post or wall.
- As long as the reference station is reinstalled in its original position, your existing virtual boundaries and work areas are preserved.
- If the reference station is remounted in a different position, you will need to recreate the virtual boundaries.
The reference station can be stored in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F).
Boundary wire installations
- Boundary and guide wires remain installed in the ground throughout winter.
If the charging station must stay outdoors:
- Keep connected to mains power
- Keep boundary and guide wires connected
