How to plan a wire free lawn mower installation in my garden
Husqvarna's intelligent satellite-based technology EPOS® (Exact Positioning Operating System) enables you to create virtual boundaries for your mower via the Automower® Connect app. Designed to deliver high precision accuracy in seconds, the satellite signals require an open sky view to ensure optimal technical conditions. That means buildings or trees in or around the lawn can block the satellite signals. Our camera-equipped models use AI vision technology to support in areas where satellite signals are weak, so that the mower will continue to mow your full lawn. Please see the information below to ensure you choose the best mower for you and your garden.
Some models are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity and some with both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity. If you do not have Wi-Fi coverage across your full lawn area, consider purchasing one of the below:
- A robotic mower enabled with cellular connectivity.
- The Automower® Connect kit which enables cellular connectivity on a Wi-Fi connected Automower®. This accessory must be installed by a Husqvarna dealer.
- The Husqvarna EPOS® RS1 reference station, this accessory also provides an even higher mower position accuracy (around 2-3 cm). For Automower® Aspire R6V, Automower® 308V and Automower® 312V, this accessory must be installed by a Husqvarna dealer.
- Your network provider may offer additional accessories or services to improve your home network coverage.
The charging station needs to be placed so that the docking point can be positioned in an open area with a clear sky view (not under trees or a roof).
The docking point is a virtual point, usually positioned 1-2 meters in front of the charging station, that lets your mower know where the charging station is. Note that only the docking point needs a clear sky view, not the charging station itself.
The distance between elevated objects, like hedges or buildings, must be at least 6 m (19.7 ft) in front of the charging station, so as not to block the signal between the satellites and the docking point.
The charging station needs to have access to a power supply and for mowers that feature Wi-Fi connectivity only, you need to have Wi-Fi coverage where you place the charging station, to ensure that the mower can receive firmware updates.
Designed to deliver high precision accuracy in seconds, the satellite signals require an open sky view to ensure optimal technical conditions. Therefore buildings or trees in or around the lawn can block the satellite signals and lead to brief or extended interruptions. Examples of this are:
- Areas narrower than 4m with elevated objects on either side
- Trees around the edge of the lawn where the distance between the crown of the tree and the boundary is less than 4m
- Buildings in the work area that are in a L-shaped form
Our mowers equipped with a camera, use AI vision technology. This supports in areas with weak satellite signals to ensure full lawn coverage. The mower will continue mowing in these areas, as long as it can see grass and has a good enough position. But seeing your lawn doesn't mean seeing you. To the robotic mower, people are just a background detail. Images are processed inside the mower and never stored or shared.
For our wire free mowers without vision technology*, we offer the Support by Wire feature. This enables you to lay a physical loop wire, which guides the mower through these challenging spots, reducing the risk of interruptions.
Alternatively the virtual boundary can be placed further away from the edge in these areas, or in narrow passages, a transport path can be created so that the mower can pass through this passage but will not mow.

The reference station needs to be mounted within reach of a power supply and with an open view of the sky. At least 135° degrees of clear sky above the reference station is needed for reliable operation on your lawn. The mower does not require to be in line of sight with the reference station to be able to mow.

What happens if I do not have Wi-Fi or cellular coverage in a certain area of my lawn?
What happens if I do not have Wi-Fi or cellular coverage in a certain area of my lawn?
The robot lawn mower without perimeter wire require a stable internet connection across the full area that you want the mower to mow. If you choose a mower that has Wi-Fi connectivity (and not cellular), and you do not have Wi-Fi connectivity across your full lawn, then you can purchase the Automower® Connect kit as an additional accessory to enable cellular connectivity. Alternatively, you can purchase the Husqvarna EPOS® RS1 reference station, which also provides even higher mower position accuracy (around 2-3 cm).
Are wire free robotic mowers as effective as wired ones?
Are wire free robotic mowers as effective as wired ones?
Robot lawn mower without perimeter wire using satellite-based navigation offer a flexible solution that makes it easier to make changes to your installation by creating zones for tailored mowing. The virtual boundaries around your lawn are created via the Automower® Connect app, and once the installation is complete, those boundaries ensure that the mower navigates and mows where it should, regardless of weather and mowing area conditions. The boundaries are visible in the map section of the app, and a virtual boundary is more resilient since there's no risk of physically damaging or completely cutting off the wire by accident. A wire free robotic mower utilises the latest technology and may have a higher initial cost. However, the easy installation procedure and the flexible mowing options, supported by advanced satellite-based navigation, mean that a wire free robotic mower offers a more effective experience. In the long run, you will save time and enjoy greater convenience, making a switch to a wire free solution well worth considering.
Is there a fee for using the EPOS satellite service?
Is there a fee for using the EPOS satellite service?
No, our satellite based technology is provided via the Husqvarna Cloud at no additional cost when you purchase a mower enabled with EPOS® technology.
Will the Automower® Connect app work on my phone?
Will the Automower® Connect app work on my phone?
The Automower® Connect app supports both iOS and android, please see a complete list here of the supported operating systems. If your smartphone operating system is not supported then you will not be able to install the Automower® Connect app which is needed to install a wire free mower.
What is Support By Wire?
What is Support By Wire?
Support by wire is a feature available on some of the wire free mowers. This enables a boundary wire to be placed in areas with satellite coverage issues to support the virtual boundaries and prevent mowing interruptions. The mower usually resumes mowing in those areas once it has picked up the signal again but the wire is an option to ensure a smooth mowing experience without temporary interruptions. For example, in narrow passages and areas close to densely clustered trees where coverage can be impacted.
For mowers equipped with AI vision technology, the satellite navigation and AI vision technology combine to ensure full lawn coverage even in areas with weak satellite signals. Click here to find out more.
