Is Automower® secure? Understanding connectivity and privacy

Common questions: Can my robotic lawn mower be hacked? Is Automower® secure? How does Automower® protect my data? Is it safe to connect my robotic lawn mower to Wi-Fi?

Automower® uses wireless technology to communicate with mobile devices and operate efficiently. Here’s what you need to know about how these connections work and how they’re protected.

What connections does Automower® use?

Depending on the model, Automower® supports different technologies:

  • Bluetooth: All models from 2018
  • Wi-Fi: Select models
  • Mobile: Select models

See which models support which connectivity options in this article.

How are these connections protected?

Bluetooth security

Each mower has a unique PIN code that is set through the app. The factory default is 1234, which should be changed during initial setup. All Bluetooth connections use standard BLE encryption to keep data private.

Wi-Fi security

Automower® connects to home Wi-Fi networks using industry-standard WPA2/WPA3 encryption protocols.

Mobile security

Mobile connections use industry-standard mobile security protocols, similar to what smartphones use for data transmission, and only connect to Husqvarna’s secure systems.

Best practices for a secure connection

Change the PIN code

The factory PIN code is 1234 on all mowers produced 2024 or later. Change it to something unique when first setting up Automower® in the Automower® Connect app.

Use a private home network

  • Only connect Automower® to a secure home Wi-Fi network
  • Avoid setting up or operating Automower® on public networks (such as coffee shops, hotels, or public parks)
  • Use a strong password for the home Wi-Fi network

Keep firmware updated

Check regularly for firmware updates and install them when available. Automower® mowers that support Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) can automatically download updates when connected to Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. Updates include performance improvements and keep Automower® systems current.

Common questions about Automower® security

Q: Can the mower be controlled by others?
No. Control requires either physical access with the correct PIN code or authenticated login to an Automower® Connect account.

Q: What happens if I lose my phone?
Log in to the Husqvarna account from any device to maintain control. Change the account password if needed, which will require re-authentication on all devices.

Q: Is location data private?
Only users logged into an Automower® Connect account can see where Automower® is located.

Q: Can someone disable the mower remotely?
Only authenticated users with access to an Automower® Connect account can control Automower® remotely. Physical access requires the correct PIN code.

Q: What if someone presses the STOP button?
If theft protection is enabled, the alarm activates unless the correct PIN code is entered within 30 seconds.

Q: Do I need to worry about neighbours’ mowers?
No. Each mower uses a unique signal and PIN code. Automower® only responds to specific credentials and won’t be affected by nearby installations.

Key takeaways: keeping Automower® secure

The most important actions to take:

  • Change the factory PIN code (1234) to a unique code
  • Connect only to a secure home Wi-Fi network
  • Use a strong password for the Husqvarna account
