What Is GPS and How Does it Work?

GPS (Global Positioning System) has been around for decades, powering so much of what we do and how we do it. But, unfortunately, it’s an acronym many of us take for granted. Still, its application in everyday tasks has driven technology to new heights.

To help unravel the secrets of how GPS assisted navigation helps propel the Automower® around lawns, let’s start by taking a closer look at GPS and how it works. 

How Does GPS Work? 

To really dive deep, GPS is the American satellite constellation consisting of uses 31 different Global Positioning Satellites that orbit the Earth to create the Basic GPS Service and provides a 95% accuracy rate of up to 7.8m. This involves 3 of the 31 satellites emitting signals to Earth-based receivers. The time difference it takes to receive the satellite's signal is computed using onboard atomic clocks to provide a time-based location. 

However, some receivers use a fourth satellite that provides even more accurate data of longitude, latitude, altitude and time. As accuracy continues to improve and technology advances, automation becomes more and more of a reality.

What does this mean for your Husqvarna Automower®? 

GPS assisted navigation is used to create a map of your garden, then using a randomised pattern, the Automower® builds an image of the layout of the lawn to ensure uniform coverage. This mowing technique gives a lush, carpet-like finish, month after month. 

How GPS Provides a Perfect Finish

By creating a detailed map of your lawn and the different areas it needs to maintain, the Automower® works by using a randomised cutting pattern. When using a traditional lawn mower, the user typically creates stripes or lines that cause the grass to grow in one direction.

The randomised cutting technique cuts the grass from many directions, creating a thicker, denser finish that looks natural and aesthetically pleasing. As the Automower® cuts the lawn regularly, only the most tender grass blades are clipped, returning nutrition to the ground and preventing balding or patchiness due to grass going to seed. This method also prevents the growth of weeds as they are unable to grow and pollinate.

Every inch of the lawn is taken care of - all while being fully trackable online and navigating narrow passages, steep inclines and uneven ground. When combined with the in-built remote object detection settings, planters, garden furniture and pets are kept safe.
