DIY winter storage: complete checklist
Follow these steps to properly prepare and store Automower® at home:
Before you begin
- Optimal grass length: Leave grass slightly longer (6–8 cm / 2.36 in–3.15 in) before winter. Longer grass provides better cold-weather protection for your lawn.
- Final charge: Fully charge your mower and switch it off before storage. This protects battery health during dormancy.
- GeoFence settings (if applicable):
- Storing within GeoFence area? Keep GeoFence active
- Moving outside the area? Disable GeoFence before powering off
Cleaning and maintenance
- Deep clean both mower and charging station: Clean the body, chassis, and blade disc. Remove all grass clippings and debris from moving parts. Inspect for any visible damage or excessive wear.
- Replace blades and screws: Install new blades and screws. This prevents rust and ensures sharp cutting edges next season.
- Inspection and maintenance check: Do a general inspection, checking for wear on parts, such as the lower front wheel bearings, blade disc and body panels. Rotate the wheels to listen for any squeaking, grinding or unusual resistance. Check the charging contacts on both the mower and charging station for corrosion or debris. If you notice any issues or excessive wear, contact your dealer for spare parts or assistance.
Storage preparation
- Power supply: Disconnect and store in a dry, frost-free location.
- Wires: Use an Automower® Connector box to organise and protect wire connectors. Label each wire for easy reconnection in spring.
- Storage location requirements: Store indoors only (garage, shed, basement) in a dry environment with above freezing temperatures (>0°C/32°F). For Automower® NERA models, only the top of the charging station needs indoor storage; the baseplate can remain outside.
- Proper positioning: Rest mower on all wheels on a flat surface, or use an Automower® Wall Hanger designed for secure storage.

Can I leave Automower® outdoors all year?
Our recommendation: Indoor storage
We strongly advise indoor storage for:
- robotic lawn mower
- Charging station (except Automower®NERA baseplate)
- Power supply
What can stay outside
- Boundary and guide wires: can remain installed in the ground throughout winter.
- Automower® NERA baseplate: Designed to remain outdoors.
- EPOS™ reference station (used in wire free installations): Weatherproof and can stay outside year-round.
If indoor storage isn’t possible
For charging stations that must remain outdoors:
- Keep connected to mains power
- Keep boundary and guide wires connected
- Ensure adequate weather protection
At what temperature can I use and store my Automower® robotic lawn mower?
Storage of EPOS reference station
The EPOS® reference station (used in wire free installations) is weatherproof and designed for year-round outdoor use.
Winter storage options
Leaving outdoors (recommended):
- Keep power supply connected
- Maintains all virtual boundaries and map settings
Storing indoors:
- Keep mounting arm installed on post or wall
- Allows easy reinstallation in original position
- Preserves existing virtual boundaries and work areas
- If relocated, you’ll need to recreate virtual boundaries
The reference station can be stored in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F).
