How Automower® AI vision technology works

Automower® models with AI vision technology use an advanced in-built camera system to detect objects in real time. This intelligent vision system allows your lawn mower to see and understand its surroundings, adjusting its behaviour to avoid obstacles while mowing. Beyond smart object detection, the integrated camera provides back-up navigation in areas with weak satellite signal, ensuring continuous operation even when satellite coverage is limited. All image processing happens locally on the mower—no images are stored, transmitted or shared.

Models with AI vision technology

Daytime vision models

The following models feature AI vision technology for daytime operation. The lawn mower will continue to mow at night if scheduled but the features enabled by AI vision technology will not work:

  • Automower® Aspire® R6V
  • Automower® 308V
  • Automower® 312V

Day and nighttime vision models

The following models are equipped with an infrared camera for both daytime and nighttime operation:

  • Automower® 405VE NERA
  • Automower® 410VE NERA
  • Automower® 430V NERA
  • Automower® 450V NERA

AI vision technology and object detection

How object detection works

The in-built camera detects and avoids objects on the lawn in real time, allowing the lawn mower to adjust its behaviour and avoid obstacles while mowing.

For detailed information about how object detection works and how different models classify and respond to obstacles, see Object detection and avoidance with AI vision technology.

How AI vision technology supports navigation

Back-up navigation with EPOS®

AI vision technology works together with EPOS® satellite navigation: When satellite signal is weak or lost, the camera helps the lawn mower verify it is on grass and continue mowing, minimising the risk of operational interruptions.

When the satellite signal is temporarily lost, the lawn mower uses its camera to check its surroundings:

  • AI vision technology helps the lawn mower keep mowing for a limited distance, provided it can see grass.
  • If no grass is detected, the lawn mower will rotate to search for grass before continuing.
  • If no grass is found in any direction, the lawn mower stops and searches for satellite signal.

This combination of EPOS® positioning and visual grass detection helps to reduce operational interruptions, even when satellite coverage is limited.

Privacy and data security

How your privacy is protected

Your privacy is protected with AI vision technology. All image processing happens locally on the lawn mower itself using advanced artificial intelligence. The camera captures images only to enable real-time object detection and navigation. No images are stored, transmitted or shared.

  • Local processing: All AI analysis occurs directly on the lawn mower’s processor
  • No image storage: Images are processed in real time and immediately discarded
  • No data transmission: Camera data never leaves the lawn mower
  • Purpose-limited: The camera operates only for object detection and navigation support
