Spring

As spring arrives, get your lawn and Automower® ready for the season: set your mowing schedule, update firmware and solve common reinstallation issues.

Spring preparations

Before the first mow of the year, work through this checklist:

  • Wait until the grass reaches 5–7 cm before the season’s first mow. Start with a high cutting height and gradually lower it.
  • Rake leaves and clear debris to prevent grass mould and blade wear.
  • Aerate compacted soil and overseed bare patches.
  • Reinstall the charging station.
  • Download available firmware updates for your mower and ensure to use the latest version of the Automower® Connect app.
  • EPOS® wire free setups: Reinstall the reference station if stored indoors (and if using one). Review work areas, stay-out zones and transport paths in the app. Verify strong Wi-Fi coverage across the entire work area if using EPOS® via Husqvarna Cloud (for mowers with Wi-Fi connectivity).
  • Boundary wire setups: Walk around the garden to check the boundary wire is intact, with no loose stakes or visible damage.
  • Check cutting blades—replace if not changed at the end of last season. Always replace the screw along with the blade.
  • Place the mower in the charging station and check for a solid green LED before starting operation.

Summer

Know how and when to change blades

Worn blades cause uneven cuts, increase battery use and reduce efficiency. Replace blades when you notice frayed or whitened grass tips after mowing, or visible damage on the blades themselves. Main cutting disc blades typically last 3–6 weeks; EdgeCut disc blades last 9–12 weeks. To change blades:

  • Turn the mower off, put on protective gloves and turn it upside down.
  • Rotate the skid plate to align the hole with the blade screw, then unscrew the old blade and clean the disc.
  • Attach the new blade with a new screw. Always replace the screw at the same time. Reusing screws can cause blades to come loose during operation.
  • Never mix different blade types or old and new blades on the same disc.
  • After replacing, reset the blade timer in the app: More > Statistics > Blade Usage > Reset.

Adjust the cutting height

Cutting height ranges from 2 cm to a maximum that varies by model. The method for adjusting it depends on your installation type:

  • EPOS® wire free installations: In the Automower® Connect app, go to Map, select a work area, use the slider to set the height and tap Save. Repeat for each work area.
  • AIM Technology models: See the dedicated guide linked in the article.
  • Electric cutting height (all other models): In the app, go to More > Settings > Cutting height and use the slider.
  • Manual adjustment models (Aspire™ R4, R6V, 308V, 312V, 305, 310 Mark II, 315 Mark II): Adjusted physically on the mower. See model-specific guides linked in the article.

The TargetHeight feature (available on selected models, not EPOS®) gradually lowers the cutting height from the maximum to your chosen level over 10 days. Useful at the start of a new season or after a new installation.

Automower® error messages

When an error occurs, the mower stops and its status changes to Error. In the Automower® Connect app, tap More details to see common causes and solutions. Some errors can be cleared remotely by tapping Reset Error in the app. Others require manual action on the mower:

  • Automower® with jogwheel: Press the jogwheel to activate the display, press STOP, enter your PIN, then select the start symbol and choose an operating mode.
  • Aspire™ R6V, 308V, 312V: Press STOP, enter your PIN, then select an operating mode.
  • If the mower will not start at all, check that no Stop/Pause command is active, and that no Smart Routine such as Rain Guard or Frost Guard is overriding the schedule.

Automower® battery care

The Empty battery message appears when the mower cannot find its way back to the charging station before the battery runs out. Common causes to check:

  • The guide wire is incorrectly positioned, faulty or broken.
  • Search settings are incorrect. Review them in the app: Menu > Settings > Installation > Find charging station.
  • An obstacle or stay-out zone is blocking the path to the charging station.
  • The charging station is not on a flat surface or cables are loose.

Battery lifespan is typically 2–5 years. Signs of an ageing battery include frequent returns to the charging station and stopping on the lawn with no error message. To help extend battery life: clean the charging contacts regularly, replace blades on time to reduce motor strain, keep the charging station in a shaded location and use the Scheduler Tool to avoid unnecessary mowing.

Cleaning Automower®

Regular cleaning keeps your Automower® running efficiently and extends its lifespan. To clean the mower:

  • Turn the mower off, put on protective gloves and turn it upside down.
  • Remove grass clippings by hand, then use a brush to clean the skid plate, wheels and body.
  • Inspect and clean the charging plates with a fine grade emery cloth if needed.
  • Wipe the chassis and body with a damp cloth and mild soap solution.
  • AI vision models: Keep the camera lens clean for optimal object detection. See the dedicated lens cleaning guide linked in the article.

To clean the charging station: disconnect the power, remove debris, wipe with a damp cloth and clean the contact plates. Never use a high-pressure washer. Automower® NERA models and Aspire™ R6V, 308V and 312V can be rinsed with running water from a garden hose.

Autumn and winter

Autumn mowing tips

As temperatures drop and grass grows more slowly, adapt your mowing approach to prepare the lawn for winter:

  • Leave the grass slightly longer as the season ends. The recommended final grass length before winter is 6–8 cm—longer grass provides better cold-weather protection for your lawn.
  • Keep mowing as long as the grass is actively growing. Use Frost Guard to automatically stop mowing when temperatures drop to risk levels.
  • In mild climates where grass continues to grow late in the season, let your Automower® continue on its regular schedule and reduce mowing frequency using the Scheduler Tool as needed.

Frost Guard

Frost Guard automatically parks your Automower® when frost is forecast or detected, protecting your lawn from damage caused by mowing in freezing conditions. There are two versions depending on your model:

  • Frost Guard Smart Routine (Wi-Fi or cellular models): Parks the mower when the forecast predicts temperatures below 5°C. Enable it in the app: More > Smart Home > Automower® Smart Routines > Frost Guard.
  • Frost Guard operation setting (models with a built-in temperature sensor): Parks the mower when the sensor detects 5°C or below at scheduled start time. Enable it in the app: More > Settings > Operation > Frost Guard, or on the mower display: Settings > Installation > Frost Guard.

Change blades before winter storage

Replace the cutting blades and screws before storing your Automower® for winter. Fresh blades prevent rust on the cutting disc during storage and mean your mower is ready to go when spring arrives. Always replace the screw along with the blade.

Cleaning Automower®

Give your Automower® a thorough clean before winter storage. Remove all grass clippings from the chassis, wheels and blade disc, and clean the charging contacts on both the mower and the charging station. In addition to the regular cleaning, Husqvarna recommends a professional cleaning at your dealer after each season.

Winter storage: what to do and what to expect

Follow this checklist to store your Automower® correctly:

  • Fully charge the battery before turning off. This protects battery health during storage.
  • Store the mower indoors in a dry, frost-free location (garage, shed or basement) with temperatures above 0°C. Rest it on all wheels on a flat surface or use an Automower® Wall Hanger (available in the Parts & Accessories section on Husqvarna.com).
  • Charging station: Store the charging station indoors. For Automower® NERA models, the baseplate can remain outdoors.
  • Power supply: Disconnect and store in a dry, frost-free location.
  • Boundary and guide wires can remain installed in the ground throughout winter. Label your wires before disconnecting for easier reconnection in spring.
  • EPOS® reference station: Weatherproof and designed for year-round outdoor use. If stored indoors, keep the mounting arm in place on the post or wall for easy reinstallation.
  • Your settings and schedule are stored in both the Automower® Connect app and the mower itself, and are retained even when the mower is turned off during storage.
