After much debate amongst the boys at the barber shop in the great Husqvarna/Sthil debate of 2010, my wife decided to call it quits on the arguement and call up one of my Pop's ol' buddies, a professional logger from Oregon and settled the arguement for us. His company uses them exclusively. I took a mosey over to my local Tractor Supply Store and plunked down the requsite $400.00+tax for this wolf in sheep's clothing. Over the years I've used Craftsman, McCulloch, Echo and Sthil but I have never been as impressed with a machine as I have been this 455 Rancher. With two twenty year old sons and two future son-in-laws rolling rounds, splitting and loading the truck and trailer I managed to keep far enough ahead of them to have a sit and sip coffee while I was refueling/re-oiling and touching up the chain. Easy to start, easy to restart, easy to keep clean, easy to chain swap, easy everything, and fellas, she'll chew wood into sawdust faster than it take to tell it. She's been in the woods a solid year now and cut more firewood than I can remember with no breakdowns other than a busted chain.

I have owned two of these Ranchers. The first lasted three seasons , of which I cut about 14 chords per year of firewood. During third season, saw lost compression, was told I had used the wrong mix, and it was out of warranty. I had been satisfied with its performance, so I made the mistake of buying a new one last year. I was overly cautious to make sure I was mixing the right mixture(even though I have cut firewood for over 40 years) and this saw lasted 5 months before it quit running. I took it into the dealer I purchased it from, at first he said it was the coil and it would be covered. A week later he called and said it was bad fuel and that it wasn't covered. he said they would not cover damage due to ethanol fuel. I told him that the manual that comes WITH the saw, from the MANUFACTURER, recommends fuel with at least 87 octane from a local station. So here is the summary, if YOU follow the INSTRUCTIONS that the MANUFACTURER gives you, your SAW is SURE TO FAIL, and THEY WILL NOT COVER IT UNDER THEIR WARRANTY. I spoke to the local rep and he refused to hear my complaint, blaming it on the gas, and hung up on me. I plan on soliciting anyone who has had this same issue to bring a class action suit against the manufacturer for fraud and misrepresentation according to their own owner's manual.

The right tool for the job
By Old farm boy

Comments about 455 Rancher:
For years and years, I used cheap, lightweight chainsaws around the farm. But now, those things are unusable. They're made of plastic and disappointment, and - now that the goddam government is heavily involved in power equipment - they won't even run right. So I bought a 455 Rancher, and I couldn't be happier with it. It has mad, non-stop power. It weighs more than I would prefer, but being so powerful and efficient, you're not handling a saw like this for nearly as long as a less-powerful one. I like the larger fuel and oil tanks too. Yesterday, I felled and completely cut up a medium-large dead ash tree without having to stop to refuel. This is definitely an awesome machine!

Very good saw for everyday tasks.

About Me Do-It-Yourself
I have used this saw for lots of storm clean up and downed trees. If the chain is sharp it will have no problem cutting through just about anything. I would stick to the 18 inch bar for average use, unless you plan on felling larger trees. Overall would highly recommend over other saws. Great all around saw.
Few issues - not with functionality
I did not get a case with the saw just a blade cover which I drilled a hole in and attached it to the handle with a bungee cord. When changing the blade, the emergency lock got thrown accidentally and I had to take cover off and put pliers in a vice and twist the cover to pop the emergency brake back to disengage. It would have also liked to have gotten a chainsaw wrench tool as some of the nuts vibrated off and I had the chain go flying while I was cutting. Fortunately, I found a few replacement nuts and didn't get hurt. Regardless, I LOVE this saw!. I still have a Craffsman saw in it's case in my garage.. I guess it works, but I don't know for sure, because I use this one instead.
Switch broke 3rd time cutting saw off
from Spartanburg, South Carolina
I am using my chainsaw to clear some land to have a house built on it and I needed a very good saw I could count on. Today was my first time using it and the 3rd time I went to turn the saw off it did nothing. I had to pull the choke lever to turn it off. I was very worried because my local dealer is usually 30 days out on getting things fixed and my house is going to be started by the end of this month, it is now the 19th. So I took a chance and pulled the cover off where the spark plug and air filter is at and the wire that is on the switch is all bent up and had fell out not letting it cut the spark off. I did the best I could and hopefully the wire will stay now and I wont have any other issues. The chain saw is a little on the heavy side but I guess that is to be expected with the larger engine. It buzzed through all the hard wood I cut today with no other issues. I think maybe quality control would be the blame for the wire being bent and falling out. I don't think you would go wrong buying any of these saws.

SO FAR GREAT
By Jack of all trades master of none

I had some Oddball pieces that needed to be cut into usable firewood. Had two resaw and rip a lot wet maple. I used the premix fuel and ran three and a half tanks through the machine in approximately 4 hours time. It the saw cut flawlessly the whole time. Every time I refueled I checked and adjusted the chain tension and had no problem using it as it was designed to be used. So far I have not experienced any oil leaks. The machine is a bit on the heavy side and will fatigue you quickly during constant use.

About Me Professional
I bought one size smaller Husqvarna in 2005. Within weeks it was returned sears for repair. The chainsaw was off for repair for over a month. Finally lowes called me and told me to just come and get a new chainsaw off the shelf instead of waiting longer. I opted to pay a little extra and buy the 455 rancher. I have used this chainsaw since 2005. The carburetor has never been cleaned, it always starts, and it is always reliable. In 12 years the only thing we replaced was the primer bulb. I couldn't have bought a better saw. It has sold me on Husqvarna for life. My only recommendation is to go with the 455 or larger chainsaw for people that use it professionally or often.

worst piece of machinery of any kind I have ever owned.

bar and chain are constantly binding and bending. I have spent a fortune on replacement chains and bars. I hate this machine.

I will never buy another husqvarna saw.
By Annoyed home owner

I am a home owner that cuts around 4 cord of wood per year. I bought a brand new 455 rancher 2 years ago and now it's dead. No compression and the cost to have it repaired is more than to buy a new saw. My old husqvarna lasted 14 years. My last 2 have each lasted less than 2 years each.

I would not buy this product again
While using this "Farmtough" saw on the farm it fell off the tailgate of my truck (about 3 feet). It landed in a soft hayfield and broke both the hollow plastic handle and the chain brake trigger. These are definitely not tough enough.
One of the best money can buy

I use these saws on a river project they get dropped, they cut in water, they get sand in them. As you can see they are put to the test. They start easily have really good power. To me these are the best on the market!!
