After much debate amongst the boys at the barber shop in the great Husqvarna/Sthil debate of 2010, my wife decided to call it quits on the arguement and call up one of my Pop's ol' buddies, a professional logger from Oregon and settled the arguement for us. His company uses them exclusively. I took a mosey over to my local Tractor Supply Store and plunked down the requsite $400.00+tax for this wolf in sheep's clothing. Over the years I've used Craftsman, McCulloch, Echo and Sthil but I have never been as impressed with a machine as I have been this 455 Rancher. With two twenty year old sons and two future son-in-laws rolling rounds, splitting and loading the truck and trailer I managed to keep far enough ahead of them to have a sit and sip coffee while I was refueling/re-oiling and touching up the chain. Easy to start, easy to restart, easy to keep clean, easy to chain swap, easy everything, and fellas, she'll chew wood into sawdust faster than it take to tell it. She's been in the woods a solid year now and cut more firewood than I can remember with no breakdowns other than a busted chain.

Bought one of these back in October of last year from a retailer who is not also a factory authorized repair center. Did not get a chance to use if for a couple of months, but when I did use it the first time, I got it out of the box, put the fuel oil mixture in the tank, filled the bar and chain oil reservoir with bar and chain oil and started it up. The saw ran great and I made probably 4 or 5 cuts through the trunk of a fallen tree that was probably 14 inches in diameter. The saw cut through the wood superbly. After the first 4 or 5 cuts (no more than 15 minutes of total running time) I shut the saw off to move and re-position some of the wood. When I tried to start the saw again it would not start. I tried for better than 30 minutes (probably 50 to 100 pulls on the starter cord) and it would not fire. I waited a couple of hours and tried again (another 50 to 100 pulls on the starter cord) and again nothing. I checked the spark plug just to make sure it didn't look fouled, but when that looked fine, I decided to take it in for warranty service. I checked the website to find the nearest factory authorized servicing dealer. When I took it in I found out that Husqvarna has this absolutely ridiculous policy of letting their individual authorized service dealers decide if they will or will not perform warranty work on equipment not purchased from that dealer. Bottom line is that my local servicing dealer will not do warranty work on my saw because I did not buy it from them. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU NEED TO BE VERY AWARE OF IF YOU PLAN TO BUY ONE OF THESE SAWS!!! DO NOT BUY FROM A DEALER WHO IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO WARRANTY SERVICE ON WHAT THEY SELL!!!!!So... The service dealer that I took it to said they would check out my saw and see if they could determine what was wrong with it. Foolishly I took that to mean that they would go ahead and get it sorted out for me as a warranty repair issue. But no.... I just got a call from them and they are telling me the ignition coil is bad and needs to be replaced at a cost of something over $80.00. So after running for less than 20 minutes, the ignition coil has failed and I can't get it repaired as a warranty issue. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HUSQVARNA PRODUCT EVER!!!!! Their warranty policy is absolutely STUPID!!!!!!!!!!Further I will never darken the door of the service dealer in Conroe, TX again and I would strongly caution anyone else considering doing business with this dealer as well!!! Very bad experience in every respect!!!

About Me Do-It-Yourself
Comments about 455 Rancher:
Bought this saw to clear some land and cut firewood. Thing didn't run right from day one and spend more time fighting with carb adjustment and refilling fuel than accomplishing any work! Husqvarna had a chance to convert a guy that grew up on a competitor's equipment (s---l), but they blew it big time. I won't make that mistake again.

About Me Professional
My Family and I have logged in the USA since my Great Grandfather used A double bit Axe and a 2 man Saw, My Great Granddad Felled the Mighty Redwoods of the west coast, My Grandfather and Father Worked from Oregon and Washington and Northern California to Idaho, and Montana, I my self have Worked from Oregon and Northern California to Idaho and The Black Hills of South Dakota where we call home and I purchased my first Husqvarna Pro Saw a lot of years ago and have used nothing but the Orange and White saws as well as Husqvarna Saws most of my adult life and this 455 is as close to a Pro Saw as you can get.....there are a few obvious different things between it and a Pro Saw but for the person who is going to do more than cut a load of firewood once a year......this is the saw for you. If my XP ever goes down in the woods and I happen to have my 455 in the truck....It will get put to work every day and never miss a beat....I know because My XP got damaged by a Widow Maker that barber chaired so my 455 got pressed into action for the whole week we were out cutting and felling....it never even so much as missed a single beat and did a fantastic job till I could get replacement parts for my XP.....Thanks Husqvarna for building great saws.R.C. This saw is the best home owner saw I've owned for the size.
from Greeley Hill, California
Things that are great about the saw are that it pulls a 24" bar all day everyday with no complaints for the past 2 years. I have worked this saw through 6 bars and it's still going strong as new, 2 18" bars, 2 20" bars, and 2 24" bars. This saw has gotten me out of situations stuck in the backwoods and pulled me through jobs it shouldn't have been able to do. Overall this saw has been great to me as long as I'm great to it.

The right tool for the job
By Old farm boy
from Covington, VA
For years and years, I used cheap, lightweight chainsaws around the farm. But now, those things are unusable. They're made of plastic and disappointment, and - now that the goddam government is heavily involved in power equipment - they won't even run right. So I bought a 455 Rancher, and I couldn't be happier with it. It has mad, non-stop power. It weighs more than I would prefer, but being so powerful and efficient, you're not handling a saw like this for nearly as long as a less-powerful one. I like the larger fuel and oil tanks too. Yesterday, I felled and completely cut up a medium-large dead ash tree without having to stop to refuel. This is definitely an awesome machine!
Very good saw for everyday tasks.

I have used this saw for lots of storm clean up and downed trees. If the chain is sharp it will have no problem cutting through just about anything. I would stick to the 18 inch bar for average use, unless you plan on felling larger trees. Overall would highly recommend over other saws. Great all around saw.

Few issues - not with functionality
I did not get a case with the saw just a blade cover which I drilled a hole in and attached it to the handle with a bungee cord. When changing the blade, the emergency lock got thrown accidentally and I had to take cover off and put pliers in a vice and twist the cover to pop the emergency brake back to disengage. It would have also liked to have gotten a chainsaw wrench tool as some of the nuts vibrated off and I had the chain go flying while I was cutting. Fortunately, I found a few replacement nuts and didn't get hurt. Regardless, I LOVE this saw!. I still have a Craffsman saw in it's case in my garage.. I guess it works, but I don't know for sure, because I use this one instead.
Switch broke 3rd time cutting saw off
from Spartanburg, South Carolina
I am using my chainsaw to clear some land to have a house built on it and I needed a very good saw I could count on. Today was my first time using it and the 3rd time I went to turn the saw off it did nothing. I had to pull the choke lever to turn it off. I was very worried because my local dealer is usually 30 days out on getting things fixed and my house is going to be started by the end of this month, it is now the 19th. So I took a chance and pulled the cover off where the spark plug and air filter is at and the wire that is on the switch is all bent up and had fell out not letting it cut the spark off. I did the best I could and hopefully the wire will stay now and I wont have any other issues. The chain saw is a little on the heavy side but I guess that is to be expected with the larger engine. It buzzed through all the hard wood I cut today with no other issues. I think maybe quality control would be the blame for the wire being bent and falling out. I don't think you would go wrong buying any of these saws.

SO FAR GREAT
By Jack of all trades master of none

I had some Oddball pieces that needed to be cut into usable firewood. Had two resaw and rip a lot wet maple. I used the premix fuel and ran three and a half tanks through the machine in approximately 4 hours time. It the saw cut flawlessly the whole time. Every time I refueled I checked and adjusted the chain tension and had no problem using it as it was designed to be used. So far I have not experienced any oil leaks. The machine is a bit on the heavy side and will fatigue you quickly during constant use.

I bought one size smaller Husqvarna in 2005. Within weeks it was returned sears for repair. The chainsaw was off for repair for over a month. Finally lowes called me and told me to just come and get a new chainsaw off the shelf instead of waiting longer. I opted to pay a little extra and buy the 455 rancher. I have used this chainsaw since 2005. The carburetor has never been cleaned, it always starts, and it is always reliable. In 12 years the only thing we replaced was the primer bulb. I couldn't have bought a better saw. It has sold me on Husqvarna for life. My only recommendation is to go with the 455 or larger chainsaw for people that use it professionally or often.
