EPOS™ Dock by Wire for remote charging station placement

If you want to place the charging station under a roof, beneath trees or in an area without satellite coverage, you can use the Dock by Wire feature in your EPOS™ wireless installation. This enables flexible placement of the charging station, even in remote or obstructed locations. A physical boundary wire (A) and a guide wire (B) create a corridor that guides the mower from the charging station (C) to the EPOS™ docking point (D) and back.

Supported lawn mowers

The Dock by Wire feature is available for all Automower® NERA mowers, except Automower® 435X AWD NERA.

Steps for setting up Dock by Wire

1. Ensure you have everything you need:

  • Automower® Installation kit including:
  • Loop wire: Used both as boundary wire and guide wire
  • Staples: To secure the wire to the ground
  • Couplers: To connect the wires
  • Connectors: To connect the wires to the charging station
  • Tools: A mallet, to put the stakes into the ground. Combination pliers, for cutting the boundary wire and pressing the connectors together. Adjustable pliers, for pressing the couplers together.

2. Position and connect the charging station

  • Assemble and connect the charging station. Watch the video below for detailed instructions.

  • Position the charging station at the designated location. Note that Automower® 305E, Automower® 310E NERA, and Automower® 320 NERA need to have Wi-Fi coverage in the charging station to download new firmware.
  • Do not secure the charging station to the ground until the wire installation is done.
  • Do not connect the charging station to the power outlet yet.

3. Lay the boundary wire

  • Lay the boundary wire in a loop from the charging station to the docking point and back, creating a corridor for the mower. Use Automower® staples to secure the wire to the ground.

  • Start and complete the installation behind the charging station.
  • Leave 50 cm (20 in) extra wire for the connection to the charging station.
  • To make the connection easier between the guide wire and the boundary wire, make an eyelet where the guide wire will be connected with approximately 20 cm (8 in) of the boundary wire.

Placement guidelines:

  • Recommended corridor width: 2–5 m (6–16 ft) between boundary wires
  • Minimum corridor width: 1 m (3 ft) between boundary wires
  • Maximum boundary wire length: 200 m/650 ft).

4. Connecting the boundary wire to the charging station

Use Automower® connectors to connect each end of the boundary wire to the charging station.

  • Open the connector and put the wire in the connector.
  • Close the connector with a pair of pliers.
  • Cut the wire 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 in) above the connector.

  • Open the hatch at the front of the charging station.
  • Push the right connector onto the metal pin on the charging station with the mark AR.
  • Push the left connector onto the metal pin on the charging station with the mark AL.

5. Connect the guide wire to the G1 charging station pin

Use an Automower® connector to connect the guide wire to the charging station.

  • Open the connector and put the wire in the connector.
  • Close the connector with a pair of pliers.
  • Cut the wire 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 in) above the connector.
  • Open the hatch at the front of the charging station.
  • Push the connector onto the metal pin marked G1.

6. Laying a guide wire

  • Lay the guide wire in the middle of the corridor from the charging station to the docking point, securing it to the ground with Automower® staples. Run the guide wire under the charging station base. Observe the maximum guide wire length of 100 m (325 ft).

7. Connecting a guide wire to the boundary wire

The docking point will be located where the guide wire connects to the boundary wire.

  • Cut the boundary wire with the pliers at the docking point location.
  • Push both ends of the boundary wire and the guide wire into one of the three holes at the bottom of the coupler. It doesn’t matter which hole you use for each wire.
  • Press the coupler with pliers to seal it.

  • Secure the wires and coupler to the ground with a staple.
  • For more details on how to use an Automower® coupler, read this article.

8. Connect the charging station to the power outlet.

9. Place the mower in the charging station.

10. Select Dock by Wire in the app

Start the EPOS™ setup process in the Automower® Connect app and follow the steps. When you get to the Charging station setup, select the Dock by Wire feature.

Please note that the Dock by Wire feature in the Automower® Connect app is only available once the wires are properly connected to the charging station.

11. Check for the solid green charging station LED

The charging station LED should be solid green. If the LED flashes blue, please check that all connectors and couplers are properly installed.

Dock by Wire for existing EPOS installations

If your mower and charging station are already installed with EPOS, but you want to move the charging station to a new, remote location and use the Dock by Wire feature, you need to install and connect the wires as explained above, and reinstall the charging in the app.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Map in the menu.
  2. Select Charging station from the Map objects.
  3. Click Reinstall.
