HUSQVARNA 550 XP® 4.2 5 43 43
Over Achiever I purchased this saw as a backup to my 372XP but it may become my main saw! I fell a very large maple tree, the trunk was over 12 feet high and over 30 inches in diameter. After cutting for a full day just to trim the limbs and branches, several of which were over 20" in diameter we started on the trunk. Although not as powerful as the 372 the 550 is definitely under rated, it cut the branches with ease and easily halved the large rounds from the trunk. The rev boost and light weight make this an ideal saw! September 10, 2014
Great powerful chainsaw I bought this saw to replace as the workhorse a Poulan Pro 18" saw I have had for 12 years. It served me well but started to have some issues. So I do my research and narrowed my choice to a Stihl or Husky. So after reading more and just liking the Husky a bit better I chose the 550XP with a 20" bar. I bought this saw from a mom & pop outfit that has been in business when I was in high school. Now that was back in the 80's so they have to be doing something right plus they go over the product with you in detail so you know how to use it. So I get this bad boy home and immediately flood it because I mucked up one of the steps as told by the owner on how to start the saw easily. So after getting it un-flooded if that is a word I was off to the races cutting hickory and some oaks. Now I am here to say this saw using the pre-mix fuel by Husky runs and sounds like a Formula One race car. This saw revs high and cuts like the old saying goes......a hot knife through butter! This saw is a wroker and cuts until your tired! betcha! Worth it????? You betcha! Things you must go by if you get this unit is to go by the starting instructions precisely. If you do and learn the sequence you are in business for sure. I highly suggest using the pre-mix with no ethanol content. Just makes a big difference. If you are more than the casual cutter then this saw is for you. I find having 21 acres this saw to be a necessity. Overall as far as durability..........too soon to tell since I have had this only a few months roughly. But it has cut some trees in that time. If I get 12 years like my last saw I will consider it a win! August 13, 2014
Great saw Have been using this saw for about a year now and it has great power at a super lite weight. Great on fuel! Very dependable saw. Its the saw of choice when the climbing saw gets to small. July 15, 2014
550 XP Bought the 550 XP for cutting firewood and general property maintenance. Perfect saw for cutting firewood, unless you are cutting very large wood, in which I would recommend a bigger saw then. Runs very well, no starting problems wether cold or hot. Only complaint I would have is the side cover is very hard to get off with the braking mechanism around the clutch. Seems it could fit on a bit easier to me. In my opinion there is no comparison of the XP line of saws to the general Husqvarna saws sold at Big Box stores, I have had a few of those saws and I think they are complete junk, and refuse to own another one. The extra money is well spent upgrading to the XP line. July 4, 2014
This really is the mother of all limbing saws This is my 2nd Husqvarna saw and third chainsaw overall. I cut about 20-30 cords of wood/yr. 4 years ago, I bought my first chainsaw, a 40cc light duty (non-pro) Echo with a comically thin bar and chain. It was my learner saw that I used initially for woodcutting. I quickly realized was far too small for that job. I picked up a Husqvarna 460 Rancher 3 years ago and loved it on the big trees. However, it was too heavy and the 24" bar too long for limbing quickly. Trying to use it fatigued me and I went back to using the Echo for limbing. But then my Echo saw started throwing chains, needed a new sprocket, and the tiny chains it used weren't worth paying to sharpen, and most problematic, it leaked chain oil like crazy. So I decided it was time to upgrade. I picked up a 550 XP from Jerry's saw shop in Bend, OR last week. I got great customer service from both the owner and saleswoman. They know their stuff unlike another dealer in eastern Oregon that sells Husky and Stihl and provides questionable customer service, where I was told (among other nonsense) that Stihls have twice the power of equivalent cc Husky saws (that little lie cost the other unnamed shop my business). Anyhow, I finally took the 550 out tonight for a trial run on a bunch of green ponderosa and juniper. However, when I opened the carrying case, I was quite dismayed to see that my brand new saw had leaked out all the chain oil the dealer had put in it when he set it up for me. There was a good sized pool of oil in the box that I now have to clean up. And I hadn't even run it yet. So I am taking it back to Jerry's in a few days for repair or exchange. I put new chain oil in, fired it up, and it ran like a champ. It is light, and I could tell immediately that it had a lot more power than that old light duty Echo saw I had been using. The XP pro style Husky engine made a huge difference. It just screamed through the limbs. I even used it to cut about 50 rounds out logs that were close to 20" in diameter. This thing has loads of power, but I could tell big logs were not its ideal application. Still, for the heck of it I took down a standing ponderosa that was about 26" diameter. Then I limbed out the pondo and a few junipers. The saw continued to run like a dream. Now just to fix the leaky oil issue. If it is fixed without much red tape from the dealer, I'll change my review to 5 stars. I will also say that while I like my 460 Rancher, it doesn't quite have the power I really want and now that I have a taste for what upgrading to XP saws will do for me. There is a fair chance I am going to upgrade to a 70cc or 73cc pro Husky saw for the big trees in the near future and keep the 460 Rancher just for emergencies. May 14, 2014
Husqvarna 550xp After one cut the only way the motor runs is without the chain or the blade. That does a lot of good. One would think it was jammed but there isn't anything restricting the chain and it is adjusted properly. Everything around the drive wheel is clean and clear. The chain oil is full and the oil / gas mix is correct. There is no reason that this shouldn't work, but it doesn't. A good tool is supposed to work and be reliable when you need it. This one is not. Don't buy one! May 5, 2014
husqvarna 550xp , with a pro chain this saw rips through very nicely. my old saw was a 435 has most of the same fetures but a little bit heavyer but worth every penny A+ for my new husqvarna pro saw!!! April 24, 2014
Light powerhouse With the price of propane last winter I needed to start burning wood. I wanted a saw that could handle a 20 inch bar with good power. The pro model saws from Husqvarna and stihl cost a little more but we're quite a bit lighter than the homeowner models. I had decided to buy a stihl ms 261 but I needed a screw missing from an old Husky 242 so I stopped by a Husky dealer. While there I asked the owner what saws he might have that would compare to the ms 261. He showed me the 550 XP. To me the weight and balance was much better than the ms 261. After going back and forth between the Stihl and Husky dealers there was no question the 550 just felt so much better to hold. I bought the 550 XP. After a couple of tanks of gas the saw now just screams through wood. I bought 3 cans of oil gas mix and got a total of 4 years warranty. Make sure you read the instructions on how to restart the saw when it is warm. The first time I used the saw I went out with a friend that had just bought a Husky 450 Rancher. After cutting for a while I shut off my new 550 XP in order to carry some wood to a truck. I could not get my new (highly bragged upon ) saw restarted. Fortunately I had my old 242 along with me so I could keep cutting. After getting home and re-reading the warm starting directions I haven't had any more problems or egg on my face. April 19, 2014
