Specialized but very useful tool for removing sand from lawn
I bought this to primarily remove sand build-up on my lawn that occurs in the Northeast due to sanding the roads in winter. I always saw the professionals using these in the spring and decided to buy one myself. Although I only use it a few times a year, it's fantastic for getting this otherwise very tough (nearly impossible) job done. First year I used it I took out a good 6-7 wheelbarrows of sand, and I don't have a very large street frontage (I'd guess maybe 125-150 feet'?).
Its also been helpful for cleaning up the lawn after doing landscaping work, like cleaning up loose rocks & sand in the grass after a paver install. I also found it does an OK job for removal of dead/dying crab grass after it has been treated w/ chemicals.
It is a bit heavy and is so powerful that it can give you a bit of a workout. For extended use I would probably consider a sling or harness. But it really doesn't have any cons. Its a basic tool with simple design and low maintenance. As aggressive as it is, it doesn't seem to ever damage healthy grass. Yet it throws sand out like nothing else.
After 3 seasons of use there is barely any paddle wear. I'd expect this to last quite a long time and seems to be professional grade (I've seen the same exact unit on landscaper's trucks). I'm glad I purchased it and for me it will easily pay for itself vs. rental or landscaper fees.
