Working with a chainsaw involves many different work situations, where both simple and more complicated tasks can be dangerous if the work is not done in a proper way. Correct working techniques are essential in order to avoid accidents.
”No matter what work you’re performing or how experienced you are, you can never make up for imperfect technique”, says Magnus Anderson, product specialist chainsaws, Husqvarna.
Husqvarna has already released a first manual on the basics of safe and efficient chainsaw use, and is shortly about to release their second one: “Working with chainsaws” – Advanced manual for safe and efficient chainsaw use. While the basic part targets beginners and other users who want to improve their techniques, the advanced part is aimed at those who carry out complex and hazardous operations such as advanced tree felling, trees under tension and working in storm-felled forests. The manuals also explain Husqvarna’s chainsaw safety system Triobrake™, which helps you work in a more safe and ergonomic way. Triobrake™ enables the chain brake to be activated a third way, with your right hand, and thereby provides extra protection by preventing for example kickbacks.
“When developing the manuals we turned to instructors and educators in the industry, consulting both Safe Forest Economical Society (Säker skog) and chainsaw training company Nordfor. Based on their knowledge and experience these comprehensive handbooks were created.”
The second part, available on Husqvarna’s website this autumn, covers methods and techniques when working in tough conditions such as felling in storm damaged forests and fire-ravaged areas. The content is not only based on practical work experience but also includes academic research.
“When working in demanding situations it’s crucial to be as prepared as possible. When we developed these manuals, safety for the users was our top priority. The scientific research results we have included actually verify the established methods that we have been using for years.”
The manuals from Husqvarna are also intended for educational purposes, primarily as a teaching aid in forest schools.
“Hopefully, both of our manuals will be a natural part of the education at forest schools as well as in chainsaw courses. We have also put together a specific school kit that besides the manuals contains presentations and posters on security, working techniques and maintenance. As a matter of fact, some schools have already requested it.”
“Working with chainsaws” – Advanced manual for safe and efficient chainsaw use – part 2 will be available on Husqvarna’s website during autumn this year.
